Groundhog’s Day Quest

Happy Groundhog’s Day!

I wanted to make sure you got this Quest in time for Groundhog’s Day on February 2! Can you believe it’s February of 2021 already?? Crazy! I’m hoping for six more weeks of winter out here. How about you?

For this Quest you will need:

  • All printable worksheets (see below)
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors (unless you pre-cut everything)
  • Small brown paper bags (1 per student)
  • Flashlight
  • Map of the United States

Pre-Quest Prep:

The home-educator should read through the Quest in advance, to be sure he or she has everything necessary and to-hand. Print off all necessary worksheets, one per student, and prepare them by cutting and stapling as required.

Save and print

Save, print, and cut out each station card. Place them around the room with a coinciding activity. To make it simpler, you could also write the corresponding letter in pencil on the back for once the kids have completed the activity.

In this Quest, kids will learn: reading, writing, basic math, counting, scientific observation, physical movement, creative storytelling, and geography.

To Begin:

Your goal is to help Punxsutawney Phil find his way back home in time for Groundhog Day!

Phil’s Lost! Punxsutawney Phil can’t remember which state his hole is in. Help him find his way back home in time for Groundhog Day!

Save and print

You’ll need to ask the other groundhogs for help! Have the kids choose which groundhog to ask next. The activities can be done in any order. The letter answers to the riddle for each activity are listed below.

1 (P)—Picture by Number, Part 1

You’ll find three different adorable Groundhog Day picture-by-number worksheets at kindergartenworksheetsandgames.com. Print all three and separate them for three different letters.

2 (E)—Picture by Number, Part 2

3 (N)—Picture by Number, Part 3

You’ll find three different adorable Groundhog Day picture-by-number worksheets at kindergartenworksheetsandgames.com. Print all three and separate them for three different letters.

4 (S)—Shadow Science

Let’s talk about shadows! Grab a flashlight and a stuffed animal—any animal will do! We used Brown Bear because he sits up nicely on his own. Using the flashlight, we demonstrated and talked about shadows and how they change depending on where the light shines. We then moved a “cloud” in front of the flashlight (we used a pillow) and talked about how that changed the ability to see the shadow.

Answer

Where is Phil’s hole? It’s in PENNSYLVANIA! Pull out a map of the United States and trace a route from where you’re located to the state of Pennsylvania. If you happen to live in Pennsylvania already, just pretend Phil has to get to you from us here in Washington state! 🙂

Thanks for joining us! I hope you found this Quest a fun way of celebrating Groundhog Day! Happy Questing!
